Questa parte 3-10 della EN 50289 specifica il metodo di prova volto a determinare la capacità di un cavo finito, destinato all'impiego in sistemi di comunicazione analogica e digitale, a sopportare sollecitazioni meccaniche di torsione ed attorcigliamento.
Lo scopo principale della prova di torsione è misurare qualunque variazione nella trasmissione di potenza ottica da parte d'una fibra o nelle prestazioni elettriche di un cavo in rame, quando il cavo stesso venga sottoposto a forze torsionali e d'attorcigliamento esterne alla guaina del cavo. Uno scopo secondario è quello di valutare la possibilità di danneggiamento fisico che può prodursi quale risultato delle predette sollecitazioni.
Lo scopo principale della prova d'attorcigliamento è determinare la variazione di RL e NEXT che viene provocata allorché il cordone viene sottoposto o a piegatura o ad attorcigliamento.
Questa parte deve essere letta congiuntamente alla EN 50289-3-1, che contiene le disposizioni essenziali per la sua applicazione.
