La presente parte della IEC 60068 definisce i metodi di prova applicabili ai dispositivi per il montaggio superficiale (SMD) in vetro o in materiali sintetizzati, quali condensatori, resistori e induttori contenenti ferriti. Esistono due metodi di prova: prova di resistenza del dispositivo e prova di urti da impatto.
Lo scopo di entrambe le prove è di valutare le sollecitazioni meccaniche applicate agli SMD durante e dopo il montaggio; tali prove si riferiscono a sollecitazioni meccaniche diverse. La relativa specifica del componente dovrà indicare quale o quali metodi di prova sono applicabili.
