La Norma si applica ai dispositivi e ai trasduttori associati per il controllo e/o registrazione delle pressioni parziali di ossigeno e anidride carbonica a livello della superficie cutanea. Gli apparecchi sono destinati ad adulti, bambini e neonati e possono comprendere i dispositivi di controllo fetale al momento del parto.
Non si applica agli ossimetri a saturazione di emoglobina o ai dispositivi applicati a superfici del corpo diverse dalla cute.
L'oggetto della Norma è di stabilire alcune prescrizioni per raggiungere un livello di prestazioni soddisfacente delle apparecchiature e di stabilire condizioni di prova per alcune caratteristiche particolari.
