La presente Norma riguarda i dispositivi ed i sistemi per il telecontrollo utilizzanti formati di dati binari seriali. Viene fatta una classificazione delle condizioni ambientali alle quali il dispositivo può essere esposto, che sono di tipo climatico (vedi cap. 3; temperatura e suo tasso di variazione, pressione, piovosità, ecc.), meccanico (vedi cap.4; vibrazioni, urti, terremoti) e di altra natura (corrosione ed erosione). Tale classificazione fissa i termini sulla base dei quali si potranno effettuare prove climatiche e meccaniche.
La presente EN viene pubblicata dal CEI nella sola lingua originale inglese, a causa della limitata utilizzazione, particolarmente mirata a settori specialistici.
