Questa Norma specifica i requisiti prestazionali minimi, i metodi di prova e i risultati attesi, dei dispositivi atti a indicare velocità e distanza
i cosiddetti SDME (speed and distance measuring equipment), obbligatori ai sensi della Regola 19 del capitolo V della Convenzione internazionale per la salvaguardia della vita umana in mare (SOLAS) 74, e successivi emendamenti, ai quali è associata la Norma IEC 60945. La Norma si basa sui contenuti della Risoluzione IMO MSC.96(72).
Questa Norma viene pubblicata dal CEI nella sola lingua inglese in quanto particolarmente mirata a settori specialistici.
