La norma descrive adattatori di connessione di costruzione metrica modulare in conformità alla IEC 60917-1.
I connettori per interfaccia ed i connettori di cavi sono usati per realizzare una connessione elettrica tra una unità funzionale compatta ( es. un subrack) e le unità circostanti.
