Questa prima edizione della EN 61158-3-17 sostituisce parzialmente le precedenti Norme EN 61158-3:2004 e IEC/PAS 62405:2005.
Pur non contenendo rilevanti modifiche di natura tecnica, in questa edizione si sono cancellati i bus di campo di tipo 6, che erano di poco interesse, mentre si sono aggiunti altri tipi di bus di campo; inoltre la parte è stata divisa in diverse sottoparti numerate da 1 a 19.
Questa parte della EN 61158 fornisce elementi comuni per messaggistica di base quando il tempo in cui avviene la comunicazione è soggetto a vincoli restrittivi. Un esempio di questa condizione è rappresentato dalla necessità che il messaggio arrivi in concomitanza di una ben precisa finestra temporale, pena la non esecuzione dell'azione richiesta da detto messaggio con tutte le conseguenze del caso.
Questa specifica Norma definisce in modo astratto i tipi di servizio percepibili offerti dal livello di collegamento dati per i bus di campo di tipo 17.
Questa Norma viene pubblicata dal CEI nella sola lingua inglese in quanto particolarmente mirata a settori specialistici.
