La presente norma internazionale fa parte della serie IEC 61188 e fornisce informazioni sulle dimensioni e conformazioni delle piazzole usate per la connessione superficiale di componenti elettronici con terminali a J sui quattro lati.
La norma fornisce le appropriate dimensioni, la sagoma e le tolleranze delle piazzole a montaggio superficiale, tali da assicurare spazio sufficiente per il filetto di saldatura ed anche da permettere esami, ispezioni, prove e rilavorazioni sui giunti di saldatura risultanti.
