La Norma fa parte della famiglia che tratta le specifiche degli amplificatori ottici in commercio con relativi sottosistemi, inclusi gli amplificatori ottici a fibra (OFA), a semiconduttore (SOA) e a guida d'onda planare (PWOA).
In particolare essa propone un set di comandi, basati su quanto usato nell'industria del settore, utili per gestire gli amplificatori ottici a "controllo intelligente" normalmente utilizzati in tutti quei settori delle telecomunicazioni in cui viene richiesta una dinamicità nella fornitura dei servizi e nella riconfigurazione dei circuiti.
La specifica definisce la struttura e i contenuti dei comandi, delegando ad altre Norme la definizione dell'interfaccia fisica su cui questi comandi vengono scambiati.
Questa Norma viene pubblicata dal CEI nella sola lingua inglese in quanto particolarmente mirata a settori specialistici.
