Questa Norma contiene informazioni preliminari sul concetto di rischio e su come tale rischio influisca sulla integrità di sicurezza (allegato A), e indica un certo numero di metodi che permettono di determinare il livello di integrità di sicurezza di sistemi E/E/EP legati alla sicurezza (allegati B, C, D ed E). La scelta del metodo dipenderà dal settore di applicazione e dalle condizioni specifiche: gli allegati C, D, E, F e G danno esempi di approccio quantitativo e qualitativo semplificati allo scopo di porre in evidenza i principi base. Questi allegati sono stati inclusi per illustrare i principi generali di un certo numero di metodi, ma non danno una interpretazione univoca. Chi intende applicare i metodi illustrati negli allegati dovrà pertanto consultare ulteriori riferimenti.
La Norma in oggetto sostituisce completamente la Norma CEI EN 61508-5:2002-11 che rimane applicabile fino al 01-05-2013, di cui costituisce una revisione tecnica, ed ha lo stato di norma di base di sicurezza in accordo alla Guida 104 della IEC.
Questa Norma viene pubblicata dal CEI nella sola lingua inglese in quanto particolarmente mirata a settori specialistici.
