La presente Norma descrive una procedura per la determinazione dell'acidità negli oli minerali isolanti nuovi ed usati. Il metodo proposto può essere utilizzato per evidenziare cambiamenti negli oli minerali isolanti durante il loro uso, dovuti a fenomeni di ossidazione che non sempre sono evidenziabili attraverso l'osservazione di altre proprietà dell'olio.
Nel caso di oli nuovi, il test dell'acidità può essere usato come controllo di qualità del prodotto. Nel caso di oli minerali in servizio, il test non può essere usato per predire la loro corrosività in quanto diversi prodotti di ossidazione, presenti negli oli usati, possono contribuire all'acidità ma manifestare una grande varietà dal punto di vista delle loro caratteristiche corrosive.
