La Norma fornisce le informazioni necessarie sia alla memorizzazione e alla lettura di dati nelle carte a memoria ottica sia alla loro intercambiabilità, all'interno dei sistemi di elaborazione delle informazioni, dal punto di vista fisico, ottico e dei dati.
La norma definisce le caratteristiche generali delle carte incluso materiali, costruzione, caratteristiche, dimensioni e ambienti di collaudo, individuate come comuni a tutti i tipi di carte a memoria ottica, con riguardo del metodo di memorizzazione impiegato.
Lo scopo di questa norma è di fornire le informazioni necessarie per i costruttori, emittenti e utilizzatori di carte interessati all'interscambio di informazioni digitali codificate sulle carte a memoria ottica.
La Norma può anche servire come guida alle aziende che pianificano di sviluppare apparati e sistemi che utilizzano carte a memoria ottica. Il contenuto dei dati e l'uso delle carte dipende dalle applicazioni sviluppate da ogni azienda.
Questa Norma viene pubblicata dal CEI nella sola lingua inglese in quanto particolarmente mirata a settori specialistici.
